Why this is a fire job, not a laundry job
Lint is dry, fibrous and highly combustible, and a dryer supplies exactly what it needs to ignite: heat, and a steady flow of air. As a vent run fills, airflow drops, the machine runs hotter and longer to do the same load, and the heat has nowhere to go. Failure to clean dryer vents is consistently identified as the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires by US fire authorities.
The runs that fill fastest are the long ones and the ones with bends. A dryer in a basement venting up and out through a rim joist, or a laundry room in the middle of a house with twenty feet of duct and three elbows, will pack solid far quicker than a machine on an exterior wall with a two-foot run. Plenty of newer subdivisions around Geneva and South Elgin have exactly that long-run layout.
Signs the vent is blocked
Clothes take two cycles
The most reliable early signal. If a normal load needs running twice, airflow has dropped.
The dryer or laundry room gets hot
Heat that should be leaving through the duct is staying in the room.
A burning smell
Stop using it. That is hot lint, and it is the last warning you get.
No air at the outside vent
Run the dryer and put your hand at the exterior hood. Weak or no airflow means the run is packed.
The outside flap never opens
The damper should lift when the machine runs. A flap that stays shut, or is jammed with lint, is a blocked vent.
Damp or musty laundry room
A dryer moves a lot of moisture. If it is not going outside it is going into the house.
How we clean it
We clean the whole run, from the machine connection to the exterior hood, using a rotating brush on flexible rods driven through the duct with a vacuum capturing the debris. Blowing lint further along the duct is not cleaning it, and neither is pulling a handful out of the back of the dryer.
We also check the things that cause the blockage to come back. Flexible foil or vinyl accordion duct is a lint trap by design and it should be rigid or semi-rigid metal. Crushed duct behind a machine pushed too far back against the wall is extremely common. A missing or broken exterior damper lets birds nest in the hood. And a run that is simply too long for the machine will need cleaning more often no matter what we do — we will tell you if that is what you have.

That is the warning sign. It is a short job and it removes a real fire risk.
Dryer vent questions
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year for a typical household. More often if you have a long or bendy duct run, a large family doing frequent loads, or pets that shed heavily — pet hair loads a vent considerably faster.
Is a blocked dryer vent really a fire risk?
Yes. Lint is highly combustible and a dryer provides sustained heat and airflow. Failure to clean is consistently cited by fire authorities as the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires.
Can I clean the dryer vent myself?
You can do the first few feet with a brush kit, and that is better than nothing. What DIY kits usually cannot do is clean the full run, reach around elbows, or capture what they dislodge — which often just relocates the blockage further along.
How long does it take?
Typically 45 minutes to an hour for a standard run. Long runs, roof terminations, or a duct that turns out to be crushed or disconnected will take longer.
What kind of duct should I have?
Rigid or semi-rigid metal. Flexible foil and white vinyl accordion duct catch lint in every ridge and sag, and vinyl is combustible. If you have vinyl behind your machine, replacing it is worth doing.
My dryer is in the basement with a long run. Is that a problem?
It is not dangerous by itself, but every extra foot and every elbow reduces airflow and collects more lint. Long-run installations need cleaning more often, and it is worth knowing that rather than assuming a yearly clean covers it.
Do you clean vents in condos and apartments?
Yes, where the run is accessible from the unit. Shared or roof-terminating runs in multi-unit buildings sometimes need building management involved, and we will tell you if that is the case.
Will cleaning the vent lower my energy bill?
It should help. A dryer with clear airflow finishes a load in one cycle instead of two, which is a straightforward reduction in running time and wear on the machine.
